To differentiate between skeletal and cardiac muscle damage, to detect a heart attack and to monitor the progress of a heart damage.
To diagnose the cause of an increased creatine kinase (CK) level which could be due to a skeletal or heart muscle damage, to diagnose a subsequent heart attack or an ongoing heart damage is present.
A creatine kinase MB test is done when creatine kinase (CK) levels are increased.CK-MB test helps to determine the cause of increased creatine kinase (CK) levels ( cardiac or skeletal muscle damage). CK-MB test is done when there are symptoms like chest pain or non-specific symptoms like shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, dizziness, or nausea. CK and CK-MB have now been replaced by the troponin test which is more specific for cardiac damage.
1. Does a chest pain always indicate a heart attack?
Chest pain can be due to several causes. chest pain can be due to straining the muscles in the chest, and some lung problems. Chest pain can be due to hardening of the arteries of the heart (coronary artery disease or CAD). Chest pain can occur during exercise, hard work, or at times of stress, lasts for a few minutes and is relieved with rest. This is called angina. Medical advice is required if angina lasts longer and is not relieved with medication.
2. What are the other tests required to detect a heart attack?
Troponin is the most accurate test. Additionally, a CK test and a myoglobin test may be done.
3. What is CK index?
A CK index is calculated using CK-MB and total CK: CK index = (CK-MB, ng/mL) x100 / (total CK activity, IU/L). If CK index is higher than 2.5 to 3.0, heart damage is likely.CK index is important to differentiate between a skeletal muscle damage and a cardiac muscle damage.
