CPK Creatine Kinase.
To diagnose muscle damage and conditions associated with muscle damage for cardiac arrest detection. It is sometimes used to detect a subsequent heart attack.
When there is muscle weakness, muscle pain or dark colored urine. When muscle damage is suspected, to monitor muscle injury.
Creatine kinase (CK) test is used to detect muscle damage, inflammation to muscle or to diagnose rhabdomyolysis in a person with signs and symptoms. CK may be done along with other tests (electrolytes, BUN, creatinine, urine myoglobin) to evaluate the functioning of kidneys. CK test may detect muscle injury with nonspecific symptoms like weakness, fever, and nausea. a CK test may sometimes be used to evaluate and monitor muscle damage in cases of physical trauma. There are three CK isoenzymes ûCK-MB which is found primarily in heart muscle, CK-MM which is found primarily in skeletal muscle and CK-BB found primarily in the brain. The CK test has been replaced by troponin test to detect cardiac arrest. However, the CK test may help to detect a subsequent heart attack.
1) What is rhabdomyolysis?
Rhabdomyolysis is the rapid muscle tissue break down due to severe physical, chemical or biological injury to muscles. It includes trauma, crushing injuries, electrical shock, burns, Blood clot (thrombosis), toxins, Infections (e.g., HIV, influenza, Streptococcus), Inherited genetic and metabolic disorders, muscular dystrophy and medical conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism, several drugs (ethanol, cocaine, antibiotics, antidepressants, corticosteroids, lithium, salicylates and statins).
2) Is CK testing done in every one with muscle pain and weakness?
CK testing is not done in every one with muscle pain and weakness. However, if there is a history of trauma or drug intake or substance exposure that can cause severe muscle damage, CK testing may be indicated.
3) How can CK levels be lowered?
CK levels can be lowered when the underlying disease is controlled or the drug or toxin causing muscle damage is avoided or stopped.
4) What are the other uses of a CK test?
The CK test may sometimes be used to help detect a subsequent cardiac arrest. it can also be used to monitor heart damage.
