A lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) test is a non-specific test used to evaluate several diseases and conditions. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is an enzyme found in all living cells. LDH is expressed extensively in body tissues like blood cells and cardiac muscle. As it is released during any tissue damage, it is considered as a marker of common injuries and disease such as heart failure. The level of LDH may also increase in other types of body fluids such as cerebrospinal fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid and peritoneal fluid in the presence of a disease.
1) What is the clinical significance of LDH?
LDH test and C-reactive protein (CRP) test can be used as a warning as it indicates a cellular injury.
2) How can LDH levels be lowered?
LDH levels are automatically lowered and returned to normal when the underlying condition resolves.
3) What are LDH isoenzymes?
LDH has five different isoenzymes. They are LDH-1 seen in heart, red blood cells, kidney and germ cells, LDH-2: heart, red blood cells, kidneys, LDH-3 seen in lungs and other tissues, LDH-4 in white blood cells, lymph nodes, muscles, liver, LDH-5 seen in liver and skeletal muscle.
