Quick View
To diagnose adrenal gland problems and pituitary gland diseases (Cushing syndrome, Cushing disease, Addison disease, adrenal tumors, and pituitary tumors).
When signs and symptoms associated with excess or deficient cortisol production are present. When a hormone imbalance that could be caused by a problem of the pituitary or adrenal glands is suspected.
1. What is Cushing disease and Cushing syndrome?
Cushing disease is caused by a benign tumor of the pituitary gland where there is the excess production of ACTH thus overstimulating the adrenal gland to produce cortisol. Cushing syndrome refers to the signs and symptoms due to excess cortisol in the body, regardless of the cause (steroid hormones intake, adrenal gland tumors, and ACTH-producing ectopic tumors outside the pituitary gland).
2. What is Addison disease?
Addison disease occurs due to damage or destruction of the adrenal cortex where there is lack of cortisol and other adrenal steroids. It is an autoimmune condition.
