Quick View
To monitor treatment and detect recurrence of ovarian cancer, to evaluate pelvic mass in symptomatic women, to detect early ovarian cancer in high-risk cases.
To monitor the treatment for ovarian cancer, when there is a pelvic mass or at a high risk for developing ovarian cancer.
Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125) is a tumor marker to monitor ovarian cancer treatment. CA-125 is also used to detect recurrence after completion of treatment. CA-125 along with transvaginal ultrasound is tested in women who have a mutation of breast cancer gene1 (BRCA1) or breast cancer gene 2 (BRCA2), positive family history, increasing age, reproductive history, infertility, use of hormone replacement therapy or obesity.
1) Is CA-125 always increased in ovarian cancer?
No, not in all ovarian cancers. But elevated levels have been found in about 80% of ovarian cancer cases.
2) Is ovarian cancer familial?
Family history is a risk factor for ovarian cancer as there is familial inheritance of mutation in one of the BRCA genes.
3) What are other risk factors for ovarian cancer?
Family history, increasing age, obesity and use of hormone replacement therapy.
