To monitor treatment and to detect recurrence of pancreatic cancer.
During and following pancreatic cancer treatment.
The CA 19-9 test helps to evaluate and monitor a known case of a pancreatic cancer patient undergoing treatment. Additionally carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), LFT test are done. CA 19-9 is used as a tumor marker to detect recurrence of pancreatic cancer. CA 19-9 is elevated in about 65% of cases of bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma). So it is used as a tumor marker in these cases. The CA 19-9 test is not sensitive or specific as it is elevated in several non-cancerous conditions.
1) Is CA 19-9 used as a screening test?
CA 19-9 test is associated with several false positives and false negatives results and hence is not used as a screening test.
2) What are other additional procedures required?
CT scan (computed tomography), an ultrasound, an MRI scan, an ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and biopsy.
3) What are the risk factors for pancreatic cancer?
tobacco use, age above 50 years, sex (more likely in men), family history, diabetes, chronic pancreatitis and exposure to certain chemicals.
