HCV Testing is used to screen for HCV antibodies in blood donors and pregnant women etc .as a part of the screening programme.
HCV testing is used as a screening to diagnose HCV infection and to monitor the treatment.
1. What are the modes of transmission of HCV virus?
The major routes of HCV transmission are Blood donors or organ donors, injection drug users, unsafe therapeutic injections, health care workers due to occupational exposures like needle stick injuries and sexual transmission etc.
2. What are different types of tests used to diagnose HCV infection?
There are Many types of tests that help in detecting the chronic HCV.
1. HCV Antibody Test: This test detects the antibodies against HCV present in the serum, but limitation is it ca ot specify whether the infection is Acute or Chronic.
2. HCV RNA Detection: By using PCR, the test detects active virus in the blood. The RNA generally remains in the human body for a minimum of two weeks after exposure to the virus. HCV RNA test is done to double-check a positive HCV Antibody result. It measures the level of virus in the blood and is used to monitor the treatment.
3. HCV Quantitative Viral load test: HCV Viral load test is used to monitor the treatment (before or during treatment i.e how effective the treatment , whether any changes required .
4. HCV Genotype testing: Genotype is the genetic structure of the virus.HCV shows different types of genotypes with their own subtypes. This test helps to know the type of Hepatitis C genotype of a patient in order to determine the best treatment type. It also helps in predicting the likelihood of curing the virus.
3. How do you interpret HCV Results?
1. HCV antibody Non-reactive: No HCV antibody detected.
2. HCV antibody Reactive: Presumptive HCV infection.
3. HCV antibody Reactive, HCV RNA Detected: Current HCV infection.
4. HCV antibody reactive, HCV RNA not Detected: No current HCV infection.
