In men, to evaluate infertility, low sperm count, low muscle mass or decreased libido. When a pituitary disorder or hypothalamic disorder is suspected, when a child has delayed or early puberty.
Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a hormone associated with reproduction .it is concerned with ovulation in women ( the release of an egg from the ovary ) and testosterone production in men. Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a hormone associated with reproduction .it is concerned with ovulation in women ( the release of an egg from the ovary ) and testosterone production in men. LH levels are tested with other tests such as FSH, testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone. to evaluate infertility, To diagnose pituitary disorders that affect LH production. To diagnose conditions associated with ovary or testicle dysfunction to evaluate menstrual irregularities. Multiple urine LH tests are done to evaluate LH levels during a menstrual cycle. These LH tests can be performed at home using a urine sample and detect the surge in LH indicative of ovulation. In children, LH levels are used to diagnose delayed and precocious (early) puberty. LH test is used to monitor response to administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in cases of poor ovarian or testicular function. LH test is helpful in the evaluation of precocious or delayed puberty.
1. What tests are required for evaluation of infertility?
Basic tests include measuring FSH and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels. Imaging techniques like hysterosalpingogram (image of fallopian tubes), semen analysis, body temperature evaluation, etc.
2. Why is a test for FSH and LH done in a male?
Men also produce FSH and LH which are important for reproduction. FSH stimulates the testicles to produce sperm and LH levels are measured to evaluate low testosterone levels.
3. Can the LH test be used to detect ovulation?
LH test can be used to predict ovulation as it detects the monthly pre-ovulation LH surge. But it is not a confirmatory test.
4. Can LH be tested at home?
Yes.LH can be tested at home using a urine sample.
