Quick View
To evaluate and monitor the kidney function and damage.
To evaluate and monitor the kidney function and damage, as a follow-up test to the previous positive urine protein test.
A urine protein to creatinine ratio (UP/CR) is ordered on a random urine sample if there is significant and persistent protein in the urine. Transient proteinuria is sometimes seen physiologically with diurnal variations. These conditions need to be ruled out before further testing is done. A urine protein to creatinine ratio (UP/CR) test can be done with either a 24-hour urine or a random urine sample, to monitor a known case of kidney disease or damage. It is also used to screen people at regular basis to asses their kidney function if they are on nephrotoxic drugs. A positive test requires additional tests such as the BUN, creatinine, albumin and total protein, Serum and urine protein electrophoresis, imaging scans (ultrasonography or CT scan) to evaluate kidney function, liver function and diagnose the cause of proteinuria.
1. Can test for protein in urine be done at home?
Yes using urine dipstick kits available that allow people to monitor the protein in their urine.
2. Can kidney damage be resolved?
In conditions like UTI and damage due to nephrotoxic drugs, the kidneys frequently will return to normal function as the infection resolves and when the medication is stopped.
