To monitor treatment and recurrence of thyroid cancer and autoimmune thyroid diseases.
Prior to and after the completion of treatment (radioactive iodine therapy) for thyroid cancer, to monitor for recurrence of thyroid cancer and to diagnose autoimmune thyroid disorders.
The thyroglobulin test is used as a tumor marker to diagnose, monitor treatment, evaluate the effectiveness of treatment, and monitor recurrence of thyroid cancer. Thyroglobulin test along with TSH test is done at regular intervals to monitor treatment of thyroglobulin producing thyroid cancer. Thyroglobulin test is done to detect and monitor treatment of the autoimmune thyroid disorders (Graves disease and hashimotos). Thyroglobulin test rarely is also used to differentiate between subacute thyroiditis and thyrotoxicosis factitia. Thyroglobulin test is used to determine the cause of congenital hypothyroidism in newborns.
1. Is thyroglobulin test routinely done?
No. Thyroglobulin test is not routinely done as it is not a specific test.
2. Why is thyroglobulin level not checked before thyroidectomy?
Thyroglobulin is a protein produced by normal thyroid tissue. It can be elevated in normal conditions and thyroid disorders including thyroid cancers. So the levels are not checked before thyroidectomy.
3. Can thyroglobulin level be altered by lifestyle changes?
No.
